Multiple deaths and ongoing rescue efforts at an abandoned gold mine in Stilfontein, South Africa, expose the dangers of illegal mining.

A heart-wrenching tragedy unfolded in Stilfontein, South Africa , as 43 bodies were recovered from an abandoned gold mine over a two-day period. This grim discovery came amidst an intense rescue operation by mine teams, targeting illegal miners, known as 'zama zamas,' who had taken refuge in Shaft 11 of the Buffelsfontein gold mine . The rescue effort, currently in its third phase, involves lowering a cage into the shaft to bring the remaining illegal miners to the surface.

Since Monday, over 90 zama zamas have been brought to safety alive. However, the situation remains fraught with danger. National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, confirmed that all rescued individuals were arrested and face charges related to illegal mining, trespassing, and violation of the Immigration Act. Two miners found in possession of gold are facing additional charges of possessing gold-bearing material.Mametlwe Sebei, the leader of the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA), expressed grave concern that the death toll may continue to climb. He emphasized the immediate need to focus on the rescue operation, ensuring medical attention and proper treatment for those still alive.
