David Byrne returns to SNL after more than 30 years
Byrne's appearance on the late-night comedy sketch show follows his phenomenally successful 20-week extended Broadway run ofFor his first song, Byrne and his 11-member backing band -- all barefoot and dressed in gray suits -- took the audience back to the 1980s with a theatrical performance of theclassic"Once in a Lifetime." Later in the show, the 67-year-old musician performed his 2008 collaboration"Toe Jam" with the Brighton Port Authority.
In addition to being the musical guest, Byrne also appeared in a music-filled sketch titled"Airport Sushi," which also featured a cameo by Jake Gyllenhaal. Watch the videos below.American Utopia is booked for a return engagement for the one-of-a-kind theatrical concert that combines songs from his Talking Heads heyday with selections from his eclectic solo output at New York's Hudson Theatre in September.
The critically acclaimed show will play a 17-week return engagement, beginning performances Sept. 18 and scheduled through Jan. 17, 2021, with an official reopening date to be set. A filmed version the musical, directed by Spike Lee, has been shot, with a release date to be announced for later this year.
