Nightclubs are especially vulnerable to changing trends. What is the cool place to hang out today becomes uncool tomorrow and the money stops rolling in.
The hardcore and techno night began in 1990 attracting the world's greatest DJs and performers. And until its demise in 2003 it was considered the finest night of its kind attracting hardcore clubbers from across the UK and abroad. Read more about it here. Branningans Many people say they had "fabulous" nights in Brannigans which used to be in Vicar Lane. The former club, which later became a row of shops, encouraged "eating, drinking and cavorting".
Compton Arms There are a lot of people who have fond memories of the legendary pub in Compton Road, Harehills. Some can also remember the boxing gym in the cellar and the upstairs bar known as Rocky’s. Evolution With a capacity of 2,000 this 'student superclub' on Kirkstall Road was the biggest in Leeds in 2001. It survived the death of the superclub era but shut its doors for the last time in 2013. It later became Control nightclub.
Pete Tong was one of the DJ's for the club as well as other well-known musicians such as DJ Vertigo, DJ Sy and Carl Cox. And, according to 88to98 in 1992 the club was voted the 'second-best rave venue in Europe'. The Haddon Hall The pub in Bankfield Road, Kirkstall, was turned into a Costcutter store and then converted into flats, but it used to be a lively venue, with live music and a selection of Tetley's ale on tap. It also featured in several episodes of a two-part TV drama called Beiderbeck Tapes.
Heaven and Hell With a playlist of chart pop and 70s disco, this former club on Merrion Street was probably more of the latter. It was part of a chain which went into insolvency around 2006. Planet Earth This cheap and cheerful 90s nightspot, with a revolving dance floor, later became Bondi Beach Bar .
