IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship race is Saturday in Florida.
The key element of a 12-hour race at Sebring has always been the transition from a hot day into a very cool evening, which this year may bring some rain.
The track undergoes dramatic changes in surface temperatures. While the Rolex 24 at Daytona was a tough opening test for the new LMDh cars, Sebring could turn out to be tougher because of the transition and new rules for double-stinting the Michelin tires. We have yet to see the new cars race in the rain, although the forecast only calls for possible showers in the evening and thunderstorms long after the race is run.
It’s the drivers who have the toughest challenge at sunset. They must adapt to the changing grip levels of a track already challenging enough with transitions between asphalt and concrete. A blinding orange fireball makes visibility difficult, particularly at Turn 17 at the end of the Uhlmann Straight, typically a passing zone under braking.
It’s also where cars take a different line if they’re headed for the pits. And, the wide concrete expanse can make hitting the apex difficult enough during the morning and afternoon. Some drivers love this late-race challenge and want to be the guy behind the wheel as the sun goes down, which this year is midway in the tenth hour, followed by a bewitching twilight.“With a full bright sky, you know it’s going to be really, really tough,” said Antonio Garcia, co-driver of Corvette Racing’s C8.
