Sad update to share: Police identify teens killed in Staten Island crash. Teenage driver still hospitalized with serious injuries.
Police said a black SUV was trying to make a left turn when it was struck by a red Mustang traveling at an"unsafe speed."
The Mustang slammed into a tree, splitting the car in half. A 15-year-old boy and 15-year-old girl in the backseat were ejected and later pronounced dead at the scene. The front of the car mounted a sidewalk, uprooted a small tree and crashed into a utility pole before coming to a stop. A 16-year-old girl in the front passenger seat was rushed to Staten Island University Hospital North, where she was also pronounced dead. Police identified the victims as 15-year-old Jesie Gil, 15-year-old Ashley Rodriguez and 16-year-old Fernanda Gil.
The 47-year-old driver of the SUV and his four passengers, ages 11, 19, 23 and 44, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Police said that driver was taken into custody for driving with a suspended license, and charges are pending.
