The Dutchman ruled out Scott McTominay's free kick but there were other 'strange' calls according to one former referee.
Serdar Gozubuyuk was “out of his depth” in Seville as former Scots top flight referee Des Roache lambasted the Dutchman and UEFA over the controversial decision to disallow Scott McTominay’s goal.
The Dutch whistler was a thorn in Scotland’s side with a string of big decisions going against Steve Clarke’s team – including the ruling out of the Manchester United star’s brilliant free kick. Gozubuyuk is rated highly by UEFA, but ex-Grade One whistler Roache reckons he looked like a rookie on the big stage as Scotland went down 2-0 to Spain and now have to wait for qualification to Euro 2024 in Germany next summer.
Roache told www.safebettingsites.com: “The referee looked out of his depth. There were strange decisions all over the pitch. Unai Simon just about wiped out Andy Robertson in a challenge for the ball and Gozubuyuk inexplicably gave a free kick to Spain. Of course, Andy had to come off and now has a shoulder problem. I’m not saying it was a Scotland penalty but play should have been allowed to go on.
“And then, of course, we come to the McTominay free kick. It was dreadful stuff from UEFA. Offside? I can agree with that slightly. It was never a foul on the goalkeeper. Simon didn’t even claim for it. It was embarrassing the way they changed the reason for the goal being disallowed. It looked really bad. First it’s for a foul, then it’s offside. Come on. Look, Spain were the dominant team and deserved their win.
“But we lost a goal on an offside only VAR could’ve picked up and many decisions were strange - not consistent or strong enough. What I would add is that Spain were the dominant team and deserved their win. They had so much possession and attacking play it was hard for Scotland to keep them at bay. Better team won, we lost a goal on an offside - only VAR could’ve picked up - but decisions strange and for me not consistent or strong enough.
