Three people have died and three others were hospitalized due to a Listeria outbreak in milkshakes at a Frugals restaurant in Tacoma, Washington, according to the Washington State Department of Health.

FILE - This 2002 electron microscope image made available by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows a Listeria monocytogenes bacterium, responsible for the food borne illness listeriosis. Three people have died due to a Listeria outbreak at a Frugals restaurant in Tacoma, Washington, according to the Washington State Department of Health. TACOMA, Washington – Three people are dead following a listeriosis outbreak at a fast food restaurant in Washington, officials said.

Six people were hospitalized between Feb. 27 and July 22 due to the Listeria outbreak, three of which died. Two of the three people who were hospitalized but survived reported eating a milkshake from Frugals in Tacoma before getting sick. WSDOH conducted genetic fingerprinting of bacteria to confirm the milkshakes were contaminated with the same strain of Listeria.

Most people who eat food contaminated with Listeria will not get seriously sick, according to WSDOH. However, those who are pregnant, aged 65 or older or have weakened immune systems should contact their health care provider if they ate a milkshake from Frugals in Tacoma between May 29 and Aug. 7 and have any Listeria symptoms, WSDOH said.
