Like many designers in New York, Phillip Lim has been rethinking his place in the fashion system, letting go of old practices that no longer serve him to clear space for new, more considered ways of working. It’s a process that was set in motion some seasons ago when Lim began reexamining his production line. Now 50% of the collection is made using sustainable fabrics.
With that in mind, Lim took the decision to switch from the traditional runway show to a more intimate open-house format yesterday afternoon. “I remember dressing windows at my first space on Mercer and what it was like to meet people who were just discovering the label,” said Lim, who put the call out on social media about the event at his store on Great Jones Street. “I wanted to get back to my retail roots and see if the connectivity is still there.
Shot in and around downtown New York, the look book itself celebrated familiar 3.1 territory. Lim knows his way around a city-dwelling wardrobe, and this season he fine-tuned the essentials. Dubbed the “maxi zoot suit,” his take on trendy, oversized tailoring came with some flattering trimmings, including a waist-cinching bungee cord and ruched tails.
