The temblor, which occurred 6.8 miles beneath the Earth's surface, broke not far from the Elsinore fault system.
A magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred at 10:59 p.m. Thursday about 10 miles south-southeast of Palomar Observatory, causing brief shaking that was felt in parts of San Diego County, according to the US Geological Service.
The temblor began 6.8 miles beneath the Earth’s surface, not far from the Elsinore fault, one of the most active systems in Southern California. The fault produced a roughly 6.0 quake on May 15, 1910. Seismologists believe the system is capable of generating a quake as large as 7.5. The type of quake that occurred Thursday night east of Valley Center is common in Southern California and rarely leads to larger events, seismologists say.
