The pupils complained of stomach cramps earlier on Friday after their break and were rushed to various healthcare facilities.

JOHANNESBURG - As the country battles a rise in foodborne illnesses, 21 pupils from Vuyani Primary School in Tsakane made a safe return to their respective homes from hospital on Friday after suffering from related symptoms.

The Gauteng Education Department said they don't yet know what the cause of the latest incident is but investigations were underway. Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona:"The Gauteng Department of Education can confirm that about 21 learners from Vuyani Primary School in Tsakane have been discharged after being hospitalised earlier today for displaying symptoms consistent with foodborne illness."This incident comes as a grade 6 learner from Thobeka Primary School in Meadowlands lost her life to a suspected foodborne illness earlier this week.

The grade 6 girl died on Tuesday following her hospitalisation on Monday after buying snacks from a street vendor at the weekend.
