As we draw closer to the year's halfway mark, here are five great albums and EPs by South African queer artists to check out. S'Bo Gyre's Altar Call is a cohesive body of work that sees the rapper and singer have fun with his craft. The project is a careful amalgamation of hip-hop expression, the softness and soul of amapiano, effortless R&B vocals and the explosiveness of pop and the bounce of kwaito.
The result is an addictive listen that showcases S'Bo Gyre's carefree character, confidence and lyrical ability. The lead single, sees S'Bo Gyre and his collaborators ride a laidback 90s kwaito-reminiscent beat decorated with jazz horns, resulting in one of the most slept-on rap songs of 2024.
