The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) from its initial date in February to August 2025. This decision was made after CAF experts advised that more time was needed to ensure the infrastructure and facilities meet the required standards for hosting the tournament in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The 2024 African Nations Championship ( CHAN ) has been postponed until August, just 18 days before the tournament was scheduled to commence in Kenya , Tanzania , and Uganda . CAF (Confederation of African Football ) stated that their experts had advised that 'more time is required' to guarantee that the infrastructure and facilities for the finals are 'at the levels necessary'.
The 2024 CHAN was initially set to take place between January 1st and February 28th, with several countries already announcing their squads and commencing training camps. \ 'I am confident that the stadiums, other infrastructure and facilities will be at the requisite CAF standards for hosting, in August 2025, a very successful CHAN,' CAF president Patrice Motsepe said. CHAN 2024 hosting rights were awarded in December 2023, and the second-tier competition is considered a dress rehearsal before Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. \ Despite the postponement, the group draw for CHAN will proceed as planned in Nairobi on Wednesday, even though the final roster of teams is yet to be determined. To address the resulting gaps, CAF is anticipated to announce details of an additional qualifying competition to take place prior to the rescheduled tournament. The withdrawals, coupled with the fact that over 10 countries did not enter the initial qualifying competition, have raised concerns regarding the viability of CHAN, which coincides with major domestic leagues from which players would have to be released. The tournament offers substantial financial incentives, with the winners receiving $3.5 million (£2.8 million), a 75% increase from previous editions, while the total prize money on offer at the finals amounts to $10.4 million (£8.5 million). The participating teams include Kenya (co-hosts), Tanzania (co-hosts), Uganda (co-hosts), Angola, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Congo-Brazzaville, DR Congo, Guinea, Madagascar, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sudan, and Zambia.
