Whether Makiya Noonan steps on the ice at the Silver Fox Entertainment Complex in Summerside as part of Ella Lenentine’s rink, she will realize a goal of representing P.E.I. at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in February.

Makiya Noonan, third stone for the Ella Lenentine rink from Cornwall, follows a shot during the recent Pepsi P.E.I. junior curling championships in Crapaud. The Lenentine rink will represent P.E.I. at the 2023 Canada Winter Games in P.E.I. in February.

“I don’t let bother me, or get in the way of anything I do,” said Noonan, daughter of Craig and Kristin Noonan.Noonan’s story begins in Estevan Sask., the birthplace of the now 16-year-old who’s very honoured to wear Team P.E.I.’s colours. As a baby, Makiya didn’t respond to sound, and, at nine months old, tests confirmed that she was born 100 per cent deaf.

It’s a busy upcoming two months for Team Lenentine. Along with the Canada Games, the Cornwall-based rink will represent P.E.I. at the Canadian under-18 championships in Timmins, Ont., from Feb. 5 to 11 and the New Holland Canadian junior championships in Rouyn-Noranda, Que., from March 25 to April 2.

“We want to make sure that we are supporting her whether it’s through sign language, or whether it’s through advocacy or other avenues.”
