This may sound a little wonky – bear with me here - but I’ll be looking to see if the audience reacts to Trump and Biden with cheers, laughter, boos.
Here’s why: Trump, more than other candidates - perhaps because of his TV background - takes his cues from the audience. But at the first debate in Cleveland, he couldn’t do that. Debate organizers reduced the number of people in the room - from roughly 1,000 to 80 - because of the coronavirus pandemic. . Those who were in the room didn’t react to what Trump or Biden said. Those who study presidential debates say that changed the dynamic from what we’ve been used to in recent years.
Some Trump advisers want the president to go back to the kind of debater he was in 2016 against Hillary Clinton when he reacted to the crowd with a one-liner or a joke . And they want him to give Biden time to talk .
