2019 ELECTIONS: Regional election observers fear xenophobic attack while monitoring elections By Peter Fabricius Pfabric
Southern African observers monitoring next week’s South African elections are to seek assurances from the South African government that they will be protected against xenophobic attack while doing their jobs.
He said he was glad that Dirco had already provided assurances that it would take action. Without protection “we will be as vulnerable as anyone”, Malanji added. He said this was one of the concerns which SADC’s pre-election assessment mission had noted in its meetings with various South African political stakeholders.
Overall though, Malanji said that since the first democratic elections in 1994, despite challenging conditions in the aftermath of dismantling apartheid, “South Africa has progressed remarkably well, serving in many respects as an example to the rest of the region.SADC thus duly recognises and acknowledges these tremendous strides towards the consolidation of democracy.”

OP-ED: Writing the 2019 Elections: Apartheid is dead, long live capitalismThe Capitalist Party wants to establish a conservative and distinctly illiberal society. The Socialist Revolutionary Workers Party is opposed to capitalism, and will fight for a distinctly illiberal South Africa. They form the book-ends of the political spectrum that place capitalism at the centre of everything they do. In the meantime, everyone else seems to be whirling devilishly to recitations and incantations of race, identity, ethnicity and other imaginaries.

Writing the 2019 Elections: In the end SA politics is all about race — againThere are times when it is hard to imagine South Africans rising one morning, say 100 years from now, and not blaming other races for all the problems that beset society. This is the leitmotif of the EFF. This rhetoric has been ramped up in the hustings. While the EFF has been true to form, ANC Secretary-General Ace Magashule has urged people in the Western Cape not to vote for whites, having previously declared that his party did not need white votes.
