The Hawks in Mpumalanga followed-up on information about someone arranging to transport stolen steel to Gauteng.
Two suspects are expected to appear in the Sabie Magistrate’s Court after they were arrested in connection with tampering with and damaging infrastructure.According to Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Dineo Sekgotodi, they had received information about someone arranging with a logistics company to transport steel from Mbombela to Germiston. The truck's particulars were provided to the investigating officer.
The Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit, Fidelity Security, the flying squad, and the tactical response team collaborated, monitoring the GPS co-ordinates closely. “Two vehicles, a Hyundai bakkie loaded with three cut railway tracks and a white UD truck, horse and trailer with more railway tracks were found and seized, and the two drivers were arrested, charged and detained at Sabie,” Sekgotodi says.
She adds that the steel was stolen from somewhere in the Sabie area, but investigators are still determining its intended destination. “At this stage, we don’t know the location where they were transporting the steel to since we only arrested the drivers. We still need to get the vehicle owners and the destination,” she says.
