Repairs were delayed by the removal of debris removal, the rebuilding of homes and the city's struggles to find the $5 million needed.
Paving crews began work Monday rebuilding more than 2 miles of roads in Rancho Bernardo that were damaged by the 2007 Witch Creek Fire and by subsequent efforts to clear debris from homes destroyed by the wildfire.
“Given the extent of the damage, the city just couldn’t put together enough money,” said Robin Kaufman, chair of the Rancho Bernardo Planning Board. “These repairs were on a list for a very long time.” The work will include rebuilding roadways with asphalt overlay, upgrading sidewalks and curb ramps and removing and replacing curbs and gutters. The work, which will conclude with re-striping, is scheduled to be done by late this month.“San Diego’s road-repair investments have historically been as patchy as our pavement and inadequate to keep our network of roughly 3,000 miles of streets in the condition that residents expect,” he said.
