More than 2,500 women and children were killed in the country between April and September this year in GBV related cases

It has been five years since President Cyril Ramaphosa declared that “gender-based violence in South Africa should be considered a second pandemic in the country – as serious as the coronavirus.”

“We must address the economic dimension, where men think they have the right over the bodies of their wives because they are breadwinners, or because they finance the lifestyles of their girlfriends. Many women find themselves trapped in situations of economic dependence, feeling they have to put up with abuse because the alternative is destitution,” Ramaphosa said.“This means, among other things, that we must address the way many men and boys are raised and the way they are socialised.

“We must all play our part. We must all speak up and speak out. Gender-based violence and femicide have no place in our society. None of us must look away,” Ramaphosa said.On Monday, Police Minister Senzo Mchunu revealed alarming statistics for the second quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year .
