Rochester Police Officer Anthony Mazurkiewicz was shot and killed in the line of duty on Bauman Street in July 2022. Kelvin Vickers is being tried for his murder. Members of Mazurkiewicz's family locked eyes on Vickers as jurors watched the video of a man who appeared to be Vickers walk towards Mazurkiewicz's undercover car just moments before the murder.The video reportedly shows the man holding what looks like a gun and gesturing towards where Mazurkiewicz's car was parked.
Moments later, the video shows that man exit the porch, approach the car from behind before a barrage of gunfire is heard, according to Monroe County District Attorney Sandra Doorley. "It was the last half hour of his life we saw on video," Doorley said. "I'm a little shaken up — it was hard to watch. The video spoke for itself and at the end, you could hear the gunshots hitting the van."
Defense attorney Michael Schiano said an ongoing gang dispute in the area may have created some confusion. "The people have to prove that our client knew that these were police officers," Schiano said. "Again, part of the issue that’s going to come up, as you're seeing right now, is that there’s this constant fighting back and forth between these gangs and groups — an ongoing feud basically. And the fact that there were shots fired on that street the day before between these groups clearly shows there’s an ongoing dispute between the two different gangs in that area.
