Statistics Canada notes that a change in the wording of a census question between 2016 and 2021 should be taken into account: “This change led to a decrease in the proportion of workers who said they used more than one language equally most often.” In the National Capital Region, which comprises Ottawa and Gatineau and where most federal civil servants work, English continues to gain ground, with 77.8 per cent of workers saying it was their main language of work in 2021, versus 75.9 per cent in 2016 and 76.7 per cent in 2001.Article content
