Find out which restaurants and breweries in the Bay Area have the best heated patios, and get a tutorial from “Dual Survival” star Cody Lundin on how to manage the California cold.

The scenario: You’re on an outdoor restaurant patio with the sun dropping quick. In the formidable Bay Area winter, temperatures could soon plummet to the low 50s. Goose bumps are forming. A hungry wolf – or maybe a Goldendoodle – howls in the distance. Many restaurateurs would suggest heat lamps. But, a primitive-living expert and former host of the Discovery Channel’s “Dual Survival,” has other thoughts on how to navigate the brutal urban NorCal dining environment.

He goes on: “Next, before hypothermia literally gives you the understanding of a six year old, dig deep into your archival memories and make that childhood fort. Use the tables, the walls and the remaining propane patio heaters to create a microclimate to mitigate convection and conduction while maximizing long-wave radiation.”All right, so maybe the situation here in the Bay isn’t that dire. But staying warm when eating outdoors during COVID isn’t a joke for a lot of people.

“It has been hard to replace heaters if they break,” says Wendy Sanchez, a management-team member at Torsap Thai Kitchen in Walnut Creek.
