An error in a Washington state school district 's accounting practices could lead to more than 100 positions being eliminated.The Moses Lake School District has acknowledged in recent days that the district is facing a $20 million budget shortfall.The district has pointed to a levy-failure and a reduction in state funding, but acknowledged during a school board work session Saturday that the district is also making up for $11 million in accounting error s.
The district is also funded for 100 classified staff and employs more than 400.The auditor also told them each teacher in the district is earning about $20,000 more than they're funded for, leading to an $8 million gap.In part because the levy failed, the district won't be able to make up that gap.
