From “Sith” to “holocron”, here are 10 essential Star Wars lore terms and names that were never actually used in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Not every essential Star Wars term stems from the original trilogy, with many of those only later making their debuts when George Lucas released the prequels. Thanks to its approach of having one single universe in which all stories are somewhat connected, the Star Wars canon is always expanding. Though that can lead to many Star Wars retcons, the franchise has grown used to adjusting or reimagining parts of its lore, as Star Wars stories are rarely told chronologically.

The word “Sith” was almost in the original Star Wars movie, though. An early draft for Star Wars, one that served as inspiration for the Star Wars novelization published in 1976 ahead of the film’s release in 1977, referred to Darth Vader as a “dark lord of the Sith.” Still, there was no explanation regarding what the Sith even were – it could have been a group of warriors who Darth Vader led, for example.

Padmé Luke and Leia’s mother is discussed in Return of the Jedi, yet the name “Padmé” was used for the first time when Natalie Portman’s Star Wars character was introduced in The Phantom Menace. As recalled in Duncan’s The Star Wars Archives, when discussing Darth Vader’s origin story, Lucas referred to Anakin’s wife as “Luke’s mother” and “Mrs. Skywalker.

Coruscant The idea of the Empire, which was once the Republic, having a massive capital, or even the concept of city-planets does not originate from the prequels. Alderaan, for example, was originally described in George Lucas’ early Star Wars drafts in a way that very much resembles The Empire Strikes Back’s Cloud City, which by itself is visually similar to Coruscant’s higher levels. That said, the word “Coruscant” is never used during the original Star Wars films.
