Most movie ripoffs are poor imitations. However, every so often, an action movie ripoff can go above and beyond what the original achieved.

While most action movie ripoffs are laughably pale imitations of the original hit, some can be surprisingly effective in their own right. On rare occasions, these pseudo-remakes can even go above and beyond their predecessors. It's thanks to these films that audiences know that just because an action movie is a blatant ripoff, it doesn't necessarily mean that the project is doomed to failure.

9 Kill Bill/Lady Snow Blood Quentin Tarantino's cineliteracy means that his movies are full of homages to other works. However, while Tarantino's tributes to global cinema are often intended as flattery, the director does occasionally slip into something a little more questionable. A perfect case in point is the similarities between Kill Bill and Lady Snowblood.

7 Raiders Of The Lost Arc/Secret Of The Incas Indiana Jones is the quintessential action-adventurer. Brought to life by the inimitable Harrison Ford, the original Indiana Jones trilogy is simultaneously thrilling, funny, and often outright scary. That said, it's very likely that the movies audiences know and love today would have been very different, were it not for the 1954 Charlton Heston flick Secret of the Incas.

5 Assault On Precinct 13/Rio Bravo Although he's probably best known for his horror flicks Halloween and The Thing, John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13 proves that the director is just as adept at handling taught action set pieces as he is shapeshifting aliens. Released in 1976, the movie initially met a lukewarm critical reception, before receiving its dues at that year's Cannes Film Festival. It has since cemented its status as a classic.

The similarities between the movies are not up for dispute. In fact, Italian filmmaker Sergio Corbucci subsequently claimed that he told Leone to remake the movie after seeing it in a Roman movie theater, and its US release was delayed after producers feared a Kurosawa lawsuit. Both movies feature a strong, silent protagonist, striding into to town and becoming the sword of justice on behalf of the residents, fighting off two warring gangs simultaneously.

2 King Kong/The Lost World The early years of Hollywood are so full of recycled concepts and imitation, the traditional idea of "ripping off" seems redundant. Nevertheless, there are still some important instances that resonate through cinematic history. A prime example is the similarities between the 1933 classic King Kong and 1925's The Lost World.
