A fatal multi-vehicle crash closed I-80 between 1200 and 1300 East in Salt Lake overnight. All lanes now reopen.
SALT LAKE CITY — One person has died after multiple vehicles were involved in a fiery crash in Salt Lake City.
The crash occurred on Interstate 80 between 1200 East and 1300 East around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday. Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden said there were at least three vehicles involved — two of which were semitrucks — and the crash resulted in a large fire. One driver has been confirmed deceased, but other injuries are still unknown, Roden said. The victim's identity has not yet been released yet.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation. A trooper early Wednesday said it appears the brakes failed on a semitruck headed west through Parleys Canyon. It was traveling at 70 mph to 80 mph when it approached a construction zone, sideswiped a pickup truck, hit the back of another semitruck and a construction trailer and caught fire. The freeway was closed in both directions but reopened by 6:30 a.m.
Witnesses say before the crash… it looked like the semi that looks to have lost its brakes lost control well before and was trying to pass on the shoulder and avoid hitting traffic.
